The BRAT Mastermix on Groove Radio (2000)

Origin:
While getting my mixes and re-edits on Los Angeles radio for many years, I would occasionally also appear on-air. Usually I was just calling in while my friends were DJing, or I might pop into the station(s) from time to time. I was never considered the "on air staff" at the stations. I was just the (mostly freelance) production guy they'd let speak from time to time.

That changed when Groove Radio relaunched in 2000. I had "The BRAT Mastermix" every Sunday night (yeah, I know, it took me a long time to come up with the name). For about eight weeks, I had the time of my life, until I got tired of the fact that I was working for free. While I was promised a salary (as a production guy and on-air staff), I was never given a cent. Dirty secret time: radio doesn't pay. Even if it is supposed to pay, it doesn't pay (thanks Enigma Digital). As much as I loved being on air, playing freeform radio and being part of a cool group of DJs, I just couldn't keep donating my time, waiting for my promised paychecks.

This is a highlight reel of my show. You'll hear some of the music I played, which was not exactly the Groove Radio playlist. I leaned more towards whatever had a groove, regardless of genre (think Afrika Bambaata). You'll also hear an almost literal shit ton of jingles and IDs, which were all me (lots and lots of fun samples - I really love the Chuck Henry jingle). Overall, it's a five minute over of eight weeks of fun radio.

And, yes, that is the real Dido doing a real, un-edited ID for "The BRAT Mastermix" (thanks to DJ Dave, ex-Virgin Megastore and Groove Radio DJ).

Enjoy.
