KCRW was a bit different from my other radio gigs. It all started when I was at MARS FM (geography note: MARS FM was a few miles from the Santa Monica College campus where KCRW was). Rabbit In The Moon had come to the station, and had a DAT tape of their latest remixes. As I loved Rabbit In The Moon, I wanted a copy of that DAT. Sadly, MARS FM only had one DAT tape deck. In a desperate move, I cold-called KCRW. "Hi. My name is Daniel. I work in production at MARS FM down the street. We have Rabbit In The Moon at the station right now. They have a DAT of their remixes that I REALLY want copy of, but we only have one DAT deck at the station. Is there ANY chance I can duplicate the tape at your station?" The person who answered that phone was station DJ Gary Calamar, who let me go to KCRW and clone the DAT (making him a copy as well).
After the hectic first meeting, I got to know Gary more. I told him I did a wide range of remixes, including ones not exactly appropriate for a dance radio station like MARS FM. Gary started playing my more experimental work on his show. I also did some of his "music beds" that he used to back-announce records (you know - when a DJ tells you what you just heard on the station, there's usually some music playing in the background. That is a music bed.).
I am happy to still be able to call Gary a friend, after all of these years. I even had Gary on my Fishure-Price #45Friday show a few years back.
