In 1996, Groove Radio in Los Angeles (103.1 FM) used to have a mix show at 5pm on the weekdays, hosted by Swedish Egil, called "The 5 O'Clock Disc Drive". Essentially, it was a 25 minute mix set, followed by a traffic report, for everyone stuck in miserable Los Angeles traffic.
Swedish Egil did most of the mixes, with occassional other people stepping in. While Egil's mixes were "live" mixes, I took pride that mine were definitely not. These were Pro Tools being used and abused above the call of duty. Remember...these mixes were done back in 1996. No one knew what "a mashup" or "glitch editing" really was back then. I used to get a lot of grief from the music director, because I intentionally put music I liked (and the jocks, and the listeners), and refused to put a lot of the Euro House and Disco crap that was on the station in my mix. :)
I did four (4) "5 O'Clock Disc Drives" during my run at Groove Radio. This is mix #1, which aired at 5pm (duh) on October 23rd, 1996. On this first mix, I decided to do a tradition "mix" for the first part, then when I figured the music director would stop listening, I went the hell off! Note the samples of Depeche Mode and "Funkytown". It was a small political protest about being asked to put only Euro House and Disco in my mix. ;)
You might be asking yourself "Self, why are there only three mixes, but BRAT says that there are four?" Easy. I was working on my fourth mix when the station went off the air. I decided to make the mix an hour long, and call it The Copyright Infringement Requiem, Opus 1. There you go. Four mixes. :)
